本日は大晦日ということで、前回に引き続き、いつもとは違ったスタイルでお届けします。
イギリス出身のネイティブ講師Cory先生が、各国の新年の過ごし方について紹介してくれましたので、日本語の意訳を付けてご紹介します。
各単語・文章が比較的シンプルに表現されていますので、 音読するなど、リーディング練習やフリートークのトピックにもご活用いただけると良いです。

イギリスとアメリカ

Since the clock is considered a symbol of the New Year, one of the British traditions is closely connected with Big Ben. Thousands of people gather in Trafalgar Square in London to celebrate the New Year together. In America the same happens in New York’s Time Square, where people countdown the final seconds before the clock strikes midnight. This is usually followed by a big fireworks display.
時計は新年のシンボルとされているため、イギリスの伝統行事のひとつはビッグベンと密接な関係があります。ロンドンのトラファルガー広場には何千人もの人々が集まり、一緒に新年を祝います。アメリカでは、ニューヨークのタイムスクエアで同じことが行われ、時計が0時を告げる前の最後の数秒間をカウントダウンします。その後、大きな花火が打ち上げられるのが通例となっています。
After midnight, one tradition is to sing the song; ‘Auld Lang Syne’ This Scottish ballad written by poet Robert Burns is a popular song for Britains and Americans on New Year’s. Despite being written over two hundred years ago, it quickly became associated with New Year’s Eve in the United States when a performance by singer Guy Lombardo and his band was broadcasted nationally in 1929. Hollywood ran away with it, and the song soon became synonymous with the holiday. Where as in Britain the song is typically sung in bars and pubs after midnight with everyone holding hands.
午前0時を過ぎると、「Auld Lang Syne(=蛍の光)」という歌を歌うのが伝統の一つです。詩人ロバート・バーンズによって書かれたこのスコットランド生まれの民謡は、新年にイギリス人とアメリカ人に人気のある歌です。200年以上前に書かれたにもかかわらず、1929年に歌手のガイ・ロンバードと彼のバンドの演奏が全米に放送されると、アメリカではたちまち大晦日といえばこの曲というイメージが定着しました。ハリウッドはこの歌に夢中になり、やがてこの歌はホリデーの代名詞となりました。一方イギリスでは、この歌は、午前0時を過ぎると、バーやパブで、みんなが手をつないで歌うのが一般的となりました。
Another countdown custom is to share a special New Year’s Eve kiss! The tradition comes from the belief that kissing someone at midnight will prevent loneliness during the coming year.
もう一つのカウントダウンの慣習は、大晦日に特別なキスをすることです！この慣習は、真夜中に誰かにキスをすることで、来年の孤独を防ぐことができると信じられていることに由来しています。
After the celebrations have taken place and a lot of alcohol has been consumed, New Years resolutions are also common to make, this popular tradition is infamously short-lived for many people. Many decide to set goals for themselves, such as staying fit and healthy, or spending more time with family and friends. No matter how it goes, it’s always fun to see how long you can make your resolutions last.
お祝いの席でたくさんお酒を飲んだ後は、新年の抱負を立てるのが一般的ですが、この人気の習慣は多くの人にとって短命に終わることでも知られています。多くの人は、健康と体型維持、家族や友人ともっと一緒に過ごすことなど、自分自身の目標を設定することにしています。どんな結果になろうとも、自分の決意をどれだけ持続させられるか試すのは楽しいものです。

スペイン

While many countries celebrate New Years, it is celebrated differently around the world. The Spanish tradition for New Year’s Eve involves eating 12 grapes at midnight. Each grape represents 12 months of happiness and stems from over a century ago.
多くの国が新年を祝いますが、世界では様々な祝い方があります。スペインの大晦日の伝統は、真夜中に12粒のブドウを食べるというものです。それぞれの葡萄は12ヶ月の幸福を表し、100年以上前に由来しています。

イタリア

An Italian tradition for New Year’s Eve includes tossing old possessions out of the window. The action is thought to symbolise your readiness to begin the New Year and have a fresh start but is not thought to be carried out much nowadays.
イタリアの大晦日の風習として、古い持ち物を窓から放り投げるというものがります。この行事は、新年を迎え、新たなスタートを切る覚悟を象徴していると考えられていますが、現在ではあまり行われないと考えられている。

デンマーク

In Denmark, it is considered good luck to “jump into the new year” from the top of a chair or alternatively a sofa. According to the tradition, this has to be just as the clock strikes midnight, and not surprisingly, this tradition is especially popular with kids. This is if they have managed to stay awake until midnight.
デンマークでは、椅子やソファの上から「新年に飛び込む」ことが縁起が良いとされています。この伝統は、時計が午前0時を告げるときに行われるもので、特に子供たちに人気があります。ただし、夜中まで起きていられたら、の話ですが。

ブラジル

In Brazil people usually go to the beach since it’s the summer there. Immediately after midnight, you’re supposed to jump seven waves while making seven wishes.
ブラジルは夏なので海に行くのが一般的です。午前0時になるとすぐ、7つの願いを込めながら7つの波を跳ぶということになっています。

フィリピン

In the Philippines, people serve 12 round shaped fruits such as; apples, grapes, and plums, which are believed to represent prosperity due to their shape, which resembles coins. With each fruit representing one month out of the year. 
フィリピンでは、りんご、ぶどう、プラムなど、丸い形をした12種類の果物が振る舞われ、その形がコインに似ていることから、繁栄を表すと信じられています。それぞれの果物が1年のうち1ヶ月を表しているそうです。
