本日は、クリスマスイヴということで、いつもとは違ったスタイルでお届けします。
イギリス出身のネイティブ講師Cory先生が、シンプルな英語でクリスマスとボクシング・デーについて紹介してくれましたので、日本語の意訳を付けてご紹介します。
各単語・文章が比較的シンプルに表現されていますので、 音読するなど、リーディング練習やフリートークのトピックにもご活用いただけると良いです。

Christmas

Christmas is celebrated in many different ways, some of which come from old Christian beliefs and traditions and some are more modern ways that people like to celebrate everybody’s favourite time of the year.
クリスマスは様々な方法で祝われますが、その中にはキリスト教の信仰や伝統に由来するものもあれば、1年の中で最も楽しい時期を祝うための現代的な方法もあります。
※　favouriteはfavoriteでは？と思ったあなた！イギリス英語だとfavouriteと表記します。

The most common tradition is selecting and decorating a Christmas tree which dates back to the 15th century. Each year, 30-35 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States alone. Whether you go and cut down your own tree, buy one, or use an artificial tree, decorating a tree is one of the first signs that the Christmas holiday season is upon us. People will also decorate their homes with tinsel and other Christmas themed decorations.
最も一般的な伝統は、クリスマスツリーを選んで飾ることで、その起源は15世紀にまでさかのぼります。毎年、アメリカ国内だけで3,000万本から3,500万本の本物のクリスマスツリーが販売されています。自分で伐採するにしても、購入するにしても、もしくは人工のツリーを使うにしても、ツリーを飾ることはクリスマス・ホリデー・シーズンの到来を告げる最初の兆候の一つです。また、人々は家の中をティンセル(ピカピカの糸状の飾り、日本語のモールのようなもの)などのクリスマスをテーマにした装飾品で飾ります。

Unlike in Japan, where most people spend Christmas time with friends and New Years with family, in western countries this is the opposite. Christmas is strictly for family. Christmas Day is often spent opening presents and eating Christmas dinner, however Christmas dinner is usually eaten at lunch time. A Christmas dinner will include; Roast meat (any meat is okay but Turkey and Chicken remain the most commonly eaten), roast potatoes and a variety of vegetables such as Brussel sprouts and carrots. This is often enjoyed with gravy sauce.
クリスマスは友人と、お正月は家族と過ごす人が多い日本と違い、欧米諸国ではその逆です。クリスマスはあくまでも家族のためのものです。クリスマス当日はプレゼントを開け、クリスマスディナーを食べるのが一般的ですが、クリスマスディナーと呼びつつも、ランチタイムに食べるのが一般的です。ローストしたお肉（どんな肉でも良いが、ターキーやチキンが最も一般的）、ポテト、芽キャベツやニンジンなどの野菜類。これにグレイビーソースをかけて食べることが多いです。

There is also a workplace culture during the holidays, which is known as ‘Secret Santa’.  (‘Santa’ being another name for Father Christmas) This is where the names of coworkers are written and placed in a hat or box, then each person will choose (without looking) one name. They will then have to buy a gift for that person, however the gifts are usually not serious or not so expensive.
また、ホリデーシーズンには「シークレット・サンタ」と呼ばれる職場での文化もあります。 (サンタは別名ファーザークリスマスとも呼ばれます)
これは、同僚の名前を書いて帽子や箱に入れ、各自が（見ないで）一人ずつ名前を選びます。そして、その人にプレゼントを買わなければならないのですが、プレゼントはあまり高価なものでないのが普通です。

Another custom is watching specific movies or T.V shows that put us in the holiday spirit, with the most popular Christmas movies being; ‘The Grinch’ or ‘Elf”
もう一つの習慣は、クリスマス気分を盛り上げてくれる特定の映画やテレビ番組を見ることで、最も人気のあるクリスマス映画は、「グリンチ」や「エルフ」です。

Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated after Christmas Day, occurring on the second day of Christmas (26th of December). Though it originated as a holiday to give gifts to poor people, today Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday. It originated in Great Britain and is celebrated in a number of countries that previously formed part of the British Empire, including; Canada, New Zealand and Australia.However this is not a recognised holiday in America.
ボクシング・デーは、クリスマスから2日目（12月26日）に行われる、クリスマスの後に祝われる祝日です。もともとは貧しい人々に贈り物をするための祝日でしたが、現在ではショッピングのための祝日として知られています。イギリスが発祥で、カナダ、ニュージーランド、オーストラリアなど、かつて大英帝国の一部であった国々で祝われているが、アメリカでは祝日として認められていません。
