【ワンポイントレッスン】In (the) front

英語を話す上で大変重要な前置詞は、数も多いうえに使い方も多岐に渡るので、マスターするのが難しい品詞です。

例えば“in front of”と“in the front of”の違いがわかりますか？ダイアログで確認してみましょう。ユウジとJackの会話です。

Yuji: Hang on, Jack. I don’t have my wallet.

Jack: Where do you think it is?

Yuji: I think it’s probably in front of my car.

Jack: You mean you dropped it on the road?

Yuji: No. I mean I probably left it on the driver’s seat.

この二人の会話から、“in front of”と“in the front of”の違いがわかりましたか？

“in front of~”は「～の前に」、“in the front of~”は「～の前部分に」という意味です。ユウジは車の前の部分に財布を置いてきたかもしれない、言いたかったのですが、“in front of”と言ったため、車そのものの前、つまり道路に落としたのか、とJackは聞き返しています。

“I think it’s probably in the front of my car.”と言えば、たぶん運転席かグローブボックスにあると思う、となります。
