【ワンポイントレッスン】スペルが似ているExcept と Expect

似たような響きを持つ単語で間違えやすいものを見てみましょう。以下に続くセンテンスの中でどこが間違いだか分かりますか？

All of the employees attended the anniversary party expect for the ones from Hokkaido because the flights had been cancelled.

文中の“expect”、本来であれば“except”が正しいです。

“expect”は「予期する、期待する」という意味で、“We are expecting an answer from the client by tomorrow.”（明日までにはお客様から回答をもらえることでしょう）といったように使います。

一方、“except”は「～を除いては、～のほかは」という意味で、“He works late every day except for Wednesdays.”（彼は水曜日以外は毎日遅くまで働きます）といった意味で使います。
