 例えば、中学1年生で学ぶ「go」。「go」=「行く」とだけ覚えていませんか。実は、この神動詞で表現できる範囲は、「人がどこかへ進む」という狭い意味に限らず、「今その状態から、移動して変わる/進行する/推移する」というイメージでとらえると、利用シーンがぐんと広がります。

神前置詞とは

 「神前置詞」とは、全78個ある前置詞の中から厳選された、これだけは絶対にマスターしておきたい10個の超基本前置詞のことを指します。日本語に助詞がないと成り立たないように、英語にも前置詞がなければ成り立ちません。神動詞と合わせて神前置詞も使いこなせるようになれば、英語の表現力が一段と豊かになります。以下、10個の神前置詞です。

意外と使いこなせていない…?

 簡単な英語なのに、意味が分からない…。使い方が意外だったり、自分の口からは出てこないかも!的な使い方があるのが前置詞です。

 例えば、「in」は「〜の中に」や「~(日時)に」という意味で訳されることが多いため、部屋や建物などの「物理的な空間」を表すときと、年や季節などの「時間的な空間」を表すときだけに使うものだと思われがちです。しかし、神前置詞「in」で使える範囲はそれだけに留まらず、以下のような「心理的な空間」にいる状態までもカバーすることができるのです。

・私たちは恋に落ちました。→ We’re in love.
・困っています。→ I’m in trouble.

 また、中学で習う「with」にも多用な使い方があります。「一緒に」という意味で覚えると使える範囲が限られてしまいますが、「何かとともに」という広いイメージで捉えると、以下のような、ネイティブがよく使うフレーズも表現できるのです。
