New Drug Pricing Policy

Republic of Utopia will soon have its new drug-pricing policy that will determine prices at which pharmaceutical companies can sell essential medicines in the retail market. The new pricing policy seeks to evolve a formula to fix the maximum retail prices of 348 essential drugs and also decide on the span of control.

The government's objective is to make essential drugs affordable and accessible to all. However, price control is only a means, and not an end, to meet this goal. Of course, this is not to suggest that prices of medicines should not be regulated. A host of other issues also need to be addressed to meet the objective.

The statistics are alarming. Health care spending accounts for around 9.3% of GDP, which is among the lowest in developing countries. And the Health Ministry plans to increase the budget for health to 3.5% by the end of 2015, and at least 12% of GDP by 2020.
