Did you study abroad? Your English is very good!
Waiter
Yes, I did. I did a homestay in Ireland during my third year of college. I’m in my final year now and I try to speak to foreigners every chance that I get.
Customer
I see. So do you live here?
Waiter
Actually, I commute here after class. It’s not so far. About 30 minutes by train. Where are you from? America right?
Customer
Yes, we are both from California. We’re here backpacking for a few weeks. I’ve always wanted to come to Japan.
Waiter
Really? I’m happy to hear that! Why did you want to come?
Customer
To experience a different culture I suppose. It’s so different here! Different cuisine, different architecture, different language. It’s so fascinating!
Waiter
I felt the same when I lived overseas. I got a bit homesick though. I missed Japanese food, and the weather in Ireland was always cold and rainy.

はい、そうです。大学３年のときにアイルランドでホームステイをしました。今は最終学年で、機会があるたびに外国の方に話しかけるようにしています。
客
なるほど。ここに住んでいるんですか？
ウェイター
実は、授業の後にここに通っています。それほど遠くないので。電車で３０分ほどです。お客様はどちらのご出身ですか。アメリカではありませんか？
客
そうです。２人ともカリフォルニア出身です。ここに２・３週間ほどバックパッカーとして来ています。ずっと日本に来たかったんです。

本当ですか？それを聞いて嬉しいです。どうして日本に来たかったんですか？
客
違う文化を経験したかったからだと思います。たくさんの違いがあります。違う料理、違う建築、違う言語。とても魅力的です。

海外に住んでいた時、同じことを感じました。少しホームシックもありましたが。日本食が恋しくなりましたし、アイルランドの天気はいつも寒くて雨が降っていたので。
