Christmas and Halloween

Some festivals and special occasions are so popular that they are also celebrated in other countries. Christmas is a very popular winter festival based on religious stories. Christmas is celebrated in most European countries as well as north and south America and Australia. Another popular festival is Halloween, which is celebrated on October 31st. These festivals are celebrated in Japan but they are not quite as popular as in other countries.

At Christmas, people exchange gifts on December 25th. Also, it’s traditional to have a family get together and enjoy a big meal together. A traditional Christmas dinner in the UK is roast turkey and boiled vegetables with gravy followed by Christmas pudding. Gravy is a kind of sauce made from the juice of the roast meat. It’s brown in colour and you pour the gravy over the meat and vegetables. In some countries, if there is a lot of snow, people make snowmen and have snow ball fights. The Christmas period is also very important for businesses as people spend a lot of money on food and gifts.

Halloween is a fun festival where people dress up in costumes. The theme is based on horror such as monsters, witches, ghosts and vampires. People have Halloween parties and play games such as ducking apple where you must retrieve apples from a bowl of water using only your mouth. These festivals are a time for family and friends to get together and have fun.
