Blaming The Teachers

Teachers think that students should be more responsible for their learning and their results. However, these days there is a lot more focus on the teacher and teaching style. In the past, students were blamed for their bad results, now it is the teacher’s fault. When did this shift of blame happen and why?

There is so much advice on the internet telling teachers how they can motivate their students. The one piece that stuck out was regarding awarding students for good behavior. It was suggested that if the students have completed all their tasks for the week then on Friday they could choose how to spend their time. Such suggestions included letting them watch a video or playing a game. Why is it that students need to be rewarded for handing in assignment on time? What are we trying to teach students? Are we telling them that every time they are asked to do something and if they do it, they will get something?

There should not be any rewards for what is expected. Homework that is given should be completed on time. This is one of the basic characteristics of a good student. Students should study and pass tests. The only reward they should get is from knowing that they did it for themselves, not to get a present.
