The sightseeing itself was a lot of fun, but the return trip was awful.
Matt
Oh, why was it?
Jessie
I didn’t bother to reserve a seat on the train and the non-reserved section was too crowded so I couldn’t get a seat. So I stood all the way from Tokyo to Osaka.
Matt
Wow, you must have been exhausted.
Jessie
Yes. If I had taken an earlier train, I would have gotten a seat.
マット：東京旅行はどうだった？

ジェシー：観光そのものは楽しかったんだけど、帰りが大変だったのよ。

マット：おや、どうしてだい？

ジェシー：自由席で帰ってくる予定だったんだけど、電車が混みすぎていて座れなかったの。だから東京から大阪までずっと立ちっぱなしだったのよ。

マット：わぁ、きっとへとへとになっただろうね。

ジェシー：ええ。もっと早い電車に乗っていたら、座れてたんだろうけど。

過去の事実と異なることを仮定する（仮定法過去完了）

Directions: First repeat after your tutor and then read aloud again by yourself.
課題: 先生の後に続いてくり返した後、今度はひとりで発音してみましょう。

If I had taken the earlier train, I would have gotten a seat.
(=Because I didn’t take the earlier train, I didn’t get a seat.)
If she had studied harder, she could have passed the exam.
(=Because she didn’t study hard, she couldn’t pass the exam.)
If you had asked me for help, I would have helped you.
(=You didn’t ask me for help, so I didn’t help you.)
If John hadn’t broken his leg, he could have played in the game.
（=John broke his leg, so he couldn’t play in the game.)
